Initiation

When eyes are scarce three foot above the ground
Sure kinship with earth's brightness they do show;
Blue eyes and speedwells no estrangement know,
But hand in hand like neighbours' children go.
But when some evening the old wizard sun
Works his old grammarie, amazement is begun -
Young eyes stretch wide to see
More than mere glow in that queer light
Gilding each evening tree;
And for a moment, in all space,
Alone they two might be;
Enrapt, entranced, face to face,
Beguiler and beguiled,
Whilst wonder's web is spun between
The setting sun, the child.
